2nd Grade Reading Vocabulary List

Simply stated, these are the 860 "new" Grade 2 Vocabulary words which your students must have memorized by the end of the second grade school year.  These are the same words listed in our 2nd Grade Reading Wall and vocabulary building worksheets.  15 years of experience has shown without question that students who can fluently read these words will typically score in the top 10-25% on 2nd Grade nationals tests such as the SAT and CTBS.  This "professional" list is presented in a layout that makes it excellent for either "one-on-one" testing (to pinpoint unknown words) - designing additional reading activities - or used in student/teacher conferences.  To make viewing easier, words have been written using slightly larger letter size and wider letter spacing and are placed with three weeks of words per page.

All words have been carefully selected as words commonly used in 2nd Grade reading materials and on 2nd Grade standardized tests such as the FCAT - SAT - and CTBS.  Words are presented from the "most common" at the beginning to the "lesser common" toward the end, thereby providing the most logical and effective order for instruction throughout the year.

The Classroom Reading Wall
The first step to use when teaching new words to a class

While first grade students need to master over 300 words by the end of the school year, second grade students will need to master over 800 new words to remain on grade level.  To keep progress on track, our Classroom Reading Wall teaches 6 words per day (24 per week) for the first half of the year and 7 words per day (28 per week) for the second half of the year.  Use the Classroom Reading Wall after your morning announcements and morning business as your first step for efficiently introducing new reading words to a class of 7 or more students (use the Student Reading Wall below for classes of 6 or less).  The 2nd Grade teacher begins each day's vocabulary lesson by posting the day's new reading words at the front of the classroom (as seen in the picture at right with TampaRead's developer, Richard Pressinger).  Our goal here is to place these words into the child's short term memory and demonstrate the steps to use when decoding (sounding-out) the words.   How do we do that?  Just follow the 8 easy steps listed at the top of each Classroom Reading Wall list.

8 Steps to Accelerated Memorization
of the New Reading Words

1)  Vowel Sound Practice - Discuss the sound made by the "colored" vowel in each word.  Using the picture at left as an example, the teacher would point to the red "a" in each word and say "ah" (short a sound).  The teacher then points to the red "a" in each word again and the class says the sound.
2)  Stop at the Vowel Sound
The next step is to show students how to sound out the word "up-to" the colored vowel sound - "ah" - "sa" - "ha" - "ba" - "ha." (this technique is immensely effective for helping students decode words !!).
3)  Read Words to the Class -
Once you're sure the class can do the "Stop at the Vowel Sound technique" - then read the words to the class slowly - stressing each individual sound.
4)  Teacher/Student "Call-Out" -
In this step the teacher says the sound up to the colored vowel and the students (as a group) call out the entire word. Teacher says "ah" - Students say "ask" - Teacher says "sa" - Students say "sad" - etc.
5)  Copy Cat Exercise - This is guaranteed to wake up your class and bring smiles from even the grumpiest students.  In this step the students copy every single word  - phrase - syllable - sound - noise - etc. said by the teacher.  (I personally begin by saying - "Copy Cat" (pause) - "Hello" - and the class knows immediately to say "Hello."  I then might say the following phrases of which they repeat exactly - "short a says ah" (students repeat) - "sa says sah" (students repeat) - "ha says hah" (students repeat) - "Hey" (students repeat) - "Did you hear me?"  (students repeat) - "wake up" (students repeat) - "I like pizza"  (students repeat smiling...) - "I said" (students repeat) - "short a says ahhhhhhhh." (students repeat) - "OK" (students repeat) - "stop at the vowel sound" (students repeat) - "is the key" (students repeat) - "short a ah" (students repeat) - "sa sah" (students repeat) - "ha hah" (students repeat) - "ba bah" (students repeat) - "ha hah" (students repeat) - Then I point to the first word on the Reading Wall and say - "a..s..k (students repeat) - "spells ask" (students repeat) - "s..a..d" (students repeat) - "spells sad" (students repeat) - etc.  As you can see, this is not only a fun exercise for everyone, but is extremely effective for getting important information into the student's short term memory.
6)  Boo-Boo-Catcher - Another fun activity.  Students begin by putting both hands on their desk.  The teacher then says the words in order from top to bottom - however, the teacher makes an intentional mistake when saying one or two of the words.  When the students hear the mistake they raise their hand immediately.  Call on one of the students and they must say the correct word.  By challenging the students to "look for the error" - every child is giving maximum concentration to the activity.  To increase concentration further, I begin by pointing to the word, but wait 5-10 seconds before saying the word.  This gives students time to decode and say the word in their minds.
7)
Timed Reading - Ask the class who thinks they can say the list of words in under 8 seconds.  Call on a student and get out your stop watch (or use the second hand on the classroom clock).  Say - "On your mark - get set - go!!."  Write the child's name on the board and put their time next to their name.   Do this with 4-5 students for a little exciting mild competition.
8)
Review the Word of the Day - The last word on each list contains what we call the "Word of the Day" - These words are notorious for short circuiting student comprehension while reading paragraphs because they are typically common words that have a high error rate for students. The reason they are so difficult to learn is because they do not follow basic phonics or reading rule guidelines.  For example, in a test I recently gave to approximately 100 Grade 1 students at the end of the school year, the following words were read incorrectly by more than half the students!!! - don't - doesn't - where - were - want - won't - does.  As you can see, these are very common words that are typically used in average Grade 1 reading books and test questions.  Knowing this certainly helps explain why beginning readers typically have trouble comprehending what they have read.  It is not because they can't remember what was read, but rather, a poor reading vocabulary prevented them from fluently reading the passage which is, of course, essential for deriving meaning from the passage.   In order to enable memorization of the "Word of the Day," it must receive at least 5-10 times more exposure and practice than the other list words.

This completes the initial introduction of words into the child's short term memory and usually requires about 15-20 minutes to complete.  The next step is to further solidify the words into memory by engaging the child with a challenging vocabulary building worksheet that reviews these same words.  It is important to do this immediately following the above word introduction period so the words are not "lost" from the child's short term memory.

Vocabulary Building Worksheets
Solidifying the Word Memorization Process

After your student(s) have completed the Classroom Reading Wall (or for our Home School Parents - once students have practiced the Student Reading Wall below), it is important to now practice the words further before they "drop-out" from the child's short term memory.   This is accomplished with our series of "intelligent" vocabulary building worksheets which parallel the identical words used in each Classroom and Student Reading Wall Lesson. They incorporate special strategies known as "recognition" and "delayed" memory to even further enhance memorization.  The password you'll receive to our second grade reading materials will provide access to all 144 worksheets listed in the 2nd Grade Worksheet Index.  Each Lesson corresponds to one week of reading vocabulary words.  There are 4 worksheets per Lesson,   and to remain on schedule, your student(s) should be completing one worksheet per day.   The picture at left shows the actual worksheet for Lesson 3A.  In the first box (Skill 1), the teacher uses the "Definition Clue" strategy to further enhance memorization.  For example, here the teacher could say - "After you get dirty you do this to get clean" - the students look through the words and choose - "bath."  For students who still have a hard time you would make it easier by saying - "Look through the words and find - bath."   The students then begin with the second box (Skill 2) and complete the remaining worksheet on their own (giving the teacher a 10-15 minute well deserved break).  In the Skill 2 Box, called "Letter Soup," the student looks at the scrambled letters and matches it with the correct word from above.  For example, number 1 is "tha" - the correct word which they are to write in the number 1 space is - "hat."    The final Skill 3 activity is Sentence Writing Practice.  This makes sure the student truly knows the word since they must put it into a sentence.  Once you become a TampaRead's Member, the index below shows the first 4 (of 36) worksheet lessons you will be able to access in seconds.  Click any green button in "LESSON 4" (last row) to pull up sample worksheets.

The Student Reading Wall

The larger Classroom Reading Wall explained above along with the Vocabulary Building Worksheets will do a tremendous job in keeping the majority of your students on track for progressing through the Grade 2 vocabulary words.  However, there will always be some students who are either not able to maintain the pace or 7 words per day or who were already reading below grade level when they began 2nd grade.  To address these students - we developed the "Student Reading Wall" as a safety-net to make sure all students keep up with adequate reading progress.  This  is a truly amazing tool for quickly improving a child's reading ability.  It combines a number of memorizing strategies which are especially helpful for children who have shown difficulty in learning to read in the past.   The four sheets below provide an example of just one of the 36 Lessons in the 2nd Grade Reading Wall (there are 144 sheets in all which teach the 860 new 2nd Grade reading words).   By using the techniques listed for 15-20 minutes daily, it is typical for average children to progress 1 year in reading ability after only 2-3 months (children with moderate learning problems require 4-5 months).  For a video demonstration of how to use the Student Reading Wall - click the picture above.  You must have the RealVideo Player installed on your computer to view the 2 minute clip.  If you do not have RealVideo installed then take 10 minutes to download the latest RealVideo player.  After clicking the link below - scroll to the bottom of their page to locate the icon identical to the one below.

How to Use the Student Reading Wall

Using the 4 STEPS below for 15-20 minutes daily will
greatly accelerate the learning to read process for any child.

1. SAY VOWEL SOUND
Begin by having the child say the sound made only by the color-coded vowel sound in each word.  For example, in Lesson 9A above, the child would say the sound of "short a" (ah) five times while you point to the red "a" in each word - add - hand - glad - glass - shall.
2. STOP AT THE VOWEL SOUND
The child then says the sounds made by the letters only up to the color coded vowel sound - (typically the beginning consonant and vowel sound blended together.  Again using Lesson 9A, the child would say - ah - ha - gla - gla - sha.  This teaches proper blending skills and gives the child an effective and simple technique which can be used when decoding all new words.  If the child makes even one error, tell them the correct answer and have them start again from the top.  When all "STOP AT THE VOWEL SOUNDS" are said without errors - proceed to Step 3.
3. READ EACH WORD SLOWLY
Now the child has the skills needed to begin reading the entire word.  Tell the child that we are going to do the same "Stop at the Vowel Sound" technique as before, but this time you want them to add the sounds after the color-coded vowel sound as well - in other words - to read the entire word.   If the child makes a mistake, be sure to stop them immediately and guide them to look carefully at the sounds and try again.   When the child says the word correctly (or if you tell them the word after several incorrect attempts), then go back up to the top of the list and start saying the words all over again. When the child can say all words without making one mistake, then it's time to begin every child's favorite part.
4. TIMED READING
Included with the Reading Wall is a special chart for timing how long it takes the student to say the words.  Get out the stop watch (or timer on your wrist watch) and get ready to have some fun.  Say - "On your mark - Get set - GO!! - and time the child on how long it takes to say all words on the list.   On their first attempt - don't worry if the child gets "stuck" or says a word incorrectly under the "excitement" of being timed.  If a child can't remember a word, give them about 5 seconds to figure it out on their own before you tell them the answer.  If the child says an incorrect word, go ahead and tell them the answer while emphasizing the sound they missed.

After the first attempt, write down the child's score and tell them - "Great job, now let's see if you can say them again and beat your score of ___ seconds."   The only thing you need to remember about the 2nd attempt is that if the child makes even one mistake this time in saying the words - stop the watch - explain the correct word (and sounds) - and start back over again from the top.   When the list is eventually said without an error (usually after 2-3 more attempts) - write down the child's timed score on the Timed Score Chart. The child then sees he/she beat their previous time and becomes extremely thrilled about the improvement and will be glad to try it again and again in order to "beat" the list.  We say a child can "BEAT" the list when their score reaches 10 seconds for the 1st Grade lists and 8 seconds for the shorter 2nd Grade lists.   After "beating" a list the child can then proceed to the next Lesson.
