4th Grade Reading Vocabulary List

This 14 page list contains the 800+ "new" Vocabulary words which students must have memorized by the end of 4th Grade.  These are the identical words used in our Reading Wall and Vocabulary Building Worksheets.  Students who master 95% of these words will typically be reading in the top 25% of all 4th Grade students nationally.  This "professional" download version is presented in a layout that makes it excellent for either "one-on-one" testing (to pinpoint unknown words) - designing additional reading activities - or used in student/teacher conferences.  To make viewing easier, words have been written using slightly larger letter size and wider letter spacing and are placed with three weeks of words per page.

Words used in the 4th Grade list were selected because they are the next "most frequently used words" following words used in our Grades 1 - 2 and 3 Vocabulary Lists.  We've also researched standardized tests to include words commonly seen on the FCAT - SAT - and CTBS.  Words are presented from the "most common" words at the beginning of the list to the "lesser common" toward the end, thereby providing the most logical and efficient order for instruction throughout the year.

A demo version of the 4th Grade Reading Vocabulary List is available in both
Word 97 format or Adobe Acrobat 4.0

We have two types of Reading Walls to maximize the vocabulary learning rate for your student(s).  Words used in the Reading Walls are the identical words listed in our 4th Grade Vocabulary list.  The Classroom Reading Wall contains larger size letters which can easily seen from 30 feet away and contains 3 pages which are taped together to make the daily words. This makes it ideal for the teacher to post to the board for daily instruction and activities.  The Student Reading Wall is designed to be placed along the wall at the back of a classroom or in the Grade 4 hallway - or on any wall at home.  The 4th Grade Reading Wall lists consist of 144 different columns, each containing 7 new vocabulary words.  There are a total of 7 words in each level (6 phonics words and 1 difficult "Word of the Day" which is not related to the word category). Unlike words used in the previous Grade Level Reading Walls, the words here are not arranged according to similar vowel sounds, instead, words are grouped according to a related category. For example, 7B (seen at left) lists words related to what a student should "Do When in Trouble" while Level 17C words are related to reasons "Why Someone Should Go To School."   The "Word of the Day" located at the bottom of the list is a non-related word that did not find its way into any categories and is usually more difficult to learn than the other words.  Download a free demo version of the reading wall from the link at left.

- How to use the READING WALL -
Follow the 4 STEPS below for 10-15 minutes daily
for an easy way to dramatically improve a child's reading ability

1. SAY VOWEL SOUND
Unlike the reading wall in grades 1-3, the 4th Grade words do not contain color coded vowel sounds to act as a reminder about the vowel sound.  It is hoped that by this time your student will have completely mastered the different vowel sounds and will be able to "Say the Vowel Sound" without color coding.
 2. STOP AT THE VOWEL SOUND
The child then says the sounds made by the letters only up to vowel sound - (typically the beginning consonant and vowel sound blended together.  This teaches proper blending skills and gives the child an effective and simple technique which can be used when decoding all new words.  If the child makes even one error, tell them the correct answer and have them start again from the top.  When all "STOP AT THE VOWEL SOUNDS" are said without errors - proceed to Step 3.
3. READ EACH WORD SLOWLY
Now the child has the skills needed to begin reading the entire word.  Tell the child that we are going to do the same "Stop at the Vowel Sound" technique as before, but this time you want them to add the sounds after the color-coded vowel sound as well - in other words - to read the entire word.   If the child makes a mistake, be sure to stop them immediately and guide them to look carefully at the sounds and try again.   When the child says the word correctly (or if you tell them the word after several incorrect attempts), then go back up to the top of the list and start saying the words all over again. When the child can say all words without making one mistake, then it's time to begin every child's favorite part.
4. TIMED READING
Included with the Reading Wall is a special chart for timing how long it takes the student to say the words.  Get out the stop watch (or timer on your wrist watch) and get ready to have some fun.  Say - "On your mark - Get set - GO!! - and time the child on how long it takes to say all words on the list.   On their first attempt - don't worry if the child gets "stuck" or says a word incorrectly under the "excitement" of being timed.  If a child can't remember a word, give them about 5 seconds to figure it out on their own before you tell them the answer.  If the child says an incorrect word, go ahead and tell them the answer while emphasizing the sound they missed.

After the first attempt, write down the child's score and tell them - "Great job, now let's see if you can say them again and beat your score of ___ seconds."   The only thing you need to remember about the 2nd attempt is that if the child makes even one mistake this time in saying the words - stop the watch - explain the correct word (and sounds) - and start back over again from the top.   When the list is eventually said without an error (usually after 2-3 more attempts) - write down the child's timed score on the Timed Score Card. The child then sees he/she "beat" their previous time and becomes extremely thrilled about the improvement and will be glad to try it again and again in order to "beat" the list.  We say a child can "BEAT" the list when their score reaches 10 seconds for the 1st Grade lists and 8 seconds for the shorter 2nd Grade lists.   After "beating" a list the child can then proceed to the next Lesson.

144 Grade 4 Vocabulary Worksheets

To further increase memorization of the vocabulary words practiced in the Reading Wall or Grade 4 Vocabulary List, we've developed a series of "intelligent" vocabulary building worksheets.  Each of these 144 vocabulary building worksheets parallel the identical words used in the 4th Grade Vocabulary List and Reading Wall.    They incorporate special strategies known as "recognition" and "delayed" memory to further enhance memorization.   Each Lesson corresponds to one week of reading vocabulary words.  There are 4 worksheets per Lesson, and to remain on schedule, your student(s) should memorize the vocabulary words listed in one worksheet daily.   The index below shows how the 4th Grade Worksheet Index is organized for Levels 1-9.   Click any button to open the worksheet which can then be printed out for one student or photocopied for an entire class.  In the 4th Grade Reading Package below you'll have access to all 144 Worksheets in Lessons 1-36.
