Mastering the first 1,200 words (up to Level 120) gives students the minimum vocabulary skills needed to comprehend test questions and answers in order to pass the FCAT Reading Test with a "LEVEL 2" score.

Warning! Spending time on FCAT Study Guides and Practice Tests is time wasted if students have not first mastered the minimum vocabulary needed to read test questions fluently.  This is why we have developed the FCAT vocabulary list.

Words have been divided into 120 Levels with 10 words per "Level." To increase the efficiency of the test vocabulary, words have been organized from the most common at the beginning to the least common words toward the end of the list.  Therefore, the words at the beginning appear on the test more frequently than the words at the end.

Recent assessments of students who "just miss" passing the FCAT show they are typically reading at approximately late 2nd to beginning 3rd grade level according to officials at Brevard County's Testing/Assessment Division. Beginning 3rd grade level on our FCAT Vocabulary List is approximately Levels 110-120.   Therefore, for students to have any chance of passing the FCAT, they need to have mastered at least Levels 1- 120 and preferably higher.

You'll notice the last link on the index at left reads -
"SPECIAL TEST VOCABULARY"
This is a special section which contains words repeatedly used in FCAT questions.   Since these words are critical for enabling the child to understand what is being asked in the question, please spend "extra" time practicing these words.

We have also put up the vocabulary needed to attain a "LEVEL 3" score on the FCAT.  Officials state these students are typically reading at least beginning and middle 4th grade level.  This would correspond to mastering our vocabulary lists up to Level 240-270 or higher.  For your school to receive a "B" rating, part of the criteria is that 50% of your students score a LEVEL 3 on the  FCAT Reading. You can see these words at - LEVEL 3 PRACTICE

This list provides you with the most efficient means for increasing FCAT Test scores.  Print out copies of these words and give to the parents of students reading at middle 2nd to beginning 3rd grade level.  These are the students you can "bump" over the edge with extra tutoring and parent support.

Good Luck and let us know how much better your school performs after practicing these vocabulary words.
