Dramatic Improvements in 13 Year Old with T1 Diabetes
Gordon Diabetes Reversal Project

The following table shows daily blood glucose and insulin dosages for a 13 year old African American male middle-school student who has had type-1 diabetes for 3 years. Prior to beginning a series of environmental & lifestyle changes, Gordon was experiencing highly elevated blood glucose that was not being controlled by insulin injections. Columns show blood glucose levels prior to breakfast, lunch and dinner. The column title "Lantus" lists the total units taken prior to bedtime in an attempt to have a morning glucose as close to 100 as possible. Dates from December 10 through December 16 serve as a baseline which shows glucose and Lantus levels prior to beginning the environmental and lifetsyle interventions. On the evening of December 16th, I met with Gordon's mother (Crystal) at her home and discussed the possibility of her cooperation in beginning the lifestyle intervention trial. The mother agreed and during the course of 6 weeks we gradually increased the number of interventions. Inteventions implemented include removal of various consumer products containing compounds found in peer reviewed studies from the National Library of Medicine as being linked with autoimmunity, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance or found at higher levels in patients with diabetes. This included stopping the use of the following: air fresheners - perfumes - clorox - fragrance detergents - fabric softeners - countertop disinfectants - foods containing monosodium glutamate - sodium nitrate - artificial flavors - colors - and (toward the final 3 weeks) an increasing amount of organic foods to about 75% of total diet. In observation, while the initial interventions resulted in a very large improvement in glucose control and apparent increase in insulin output, the organic diet for the final 3 weeks seemed to further accelerate improvement. This might be explained by a 2012 Greek study at Mansour University found that children with T1 diabetes had 15x higher blood levels of the food pesticide malathion, thereby suggesting a causative factor. Eating organic food for just 3 days has shown a rapid reduction of the pesticide residue in children.

BASELINE - Dec 10-16 Prior to Beginning Interventions
December 2016 Breakfast Lunch Dinner Avg Lantus Comments
Dec 10 295 64 155   24 Latus at 24 units (prescribed dose past several years)
Dec 11 329 533 307   24 Novalog 1 Unit per 5 carbs (10u per 50)
Even with this dose glucose was exceptionally high.
Dec 12 346 335 319   24
Dec 13 327 326 246   24
Dec 14 291 308 249   24
Dec 15 341 264 411   24
Dec 16 302 256 337   24

BEGIN INTERVENTION
Met with mother - Discussed research on consumer products containing chemicals linked with diabetes.
First intervention was only removal of "plug-in" type air freshners recently installed in wall outlets.
Note how glucose levels showed remarkable improvements beginning the 4th day on Dec. 20,
This provides strong evidence that phthalates and other chemicals in plug-in air fresheners can significantly elevate blood sugars by any number of routes

Jan 9 75 78 136   X Gordon forgot to take Lantus at night (fell asleep)
Jan 10 201 141 146   22u NOVALOG REDUCED to 1u per 7 carbs because of previous day's low at lunch. Even though today's numbers were higher - we did not change Novalog. Interesting how next day's numbers became "normal"
Jan 11 58 90 111   19u LANTUS REDUCED to 19 as AM very low
Jan 12 213 103 218   20u LANTUS INCREASED to 20 as AM was high

Jan 15 88 114 201   20u Although not done here - I'm considering on using morning glucose of 85 or 90 as threshhold of when to reduce Lantis as numbers may not go lower if alpha-cells are working to raise blood sugar via production of glucagon.

Jan 21 59 118 113   17u LANTUS REDUCED to 17 - Period of accelerated regeneration?

Jan 22 101/170 170 151   17u Gordon ate aspartame cereal at 6AM & aspartame popsicle 10AM explains rise to 170. We are seeing a pattern of eating aspartame and sucralose and subsequent elevated glucose. Gordon took 1 unit insulin to reduce glucose - which interestingly had no effect, so Gordon took another unit & still no effect, thereby suggesting aspartame may cause insulin resistance or suppression of gene expression of insulin receptor or glucose transport genes.

Jan 24 84 61 152   17u
Jan 25 74 95 79   16u LANTUS REDUCED to 16
Jan 26 69 108 149   13u LANTUS REDUCED to 13 (to observe effect) - tolerated
Jan 27 121 127 253*   13u Complained of strong gasoline/chemical smell when walking to the store with his sister at 3 PM and prior to dinner measurement. Suggest chemical was responsible for insulin resistance since glucose raised without eating additional carbs.
Jan 28 97 103 59   13u

Jan 29 129 84 136   13u
Jan 30 78 94 248*   13u LANTUS REDUCED to 13 - Electrician worked on heating unit inside home. Mother said they used strong spray chemical on unit which lingered in home - she did not open windows. This could explain high of 248 at dinner. Interestingly, each time we observe an "unexplained high" we are able to find a preceding event of exposure.
Jan 31 140 75 118   13u
Feb 1 118 56 101/204*   13u Gordon's mother did a "nighttime" Clorox floor cleaning at 11PM. Gordon woke up at midnight & tested again - his sugar was 204 at midnight, thereby suggesting bleach and by-products may impair glucose control. The chlorine byproduct dichlorophenol is formed after using clorox and has been linked to diabetes and glucose issues.

Feb 3 97 80 103   13u

BEGIN INCREASED ORGANIC FOOD - approx. 75%
Feb 4 61 56 118   12u LANTUS REDUCED to 12
Feb 5 123 85 127   12u NOVALOG REDUCED TO 1 unit per 9 carbs
as previous breakfast and lunch numbers were low
Feb 6 99 87 96   12u
Feb 7 112 115 92*   12u Mother told Gordon not to take dinner insulin at all (worried for some reason) and defying all logic, Gordon's next morning blood sugar was very low instead of high. This also implies another regenerative period. Some studies show that high blood sugar (at some times) can send a signal to the beta-cell systems to encourage regeneration.
Feb 8 64 86 105   11u LANTUS REDUCED to 11
Another suprising morning drop in blood sugar below our threshhold of 90.
