Alphabet and Consonant Sound Test
Mastery of alphabet letter names and consonant sounds are the first essential steps in teaching a child to read successfully.  Failure to achieve this will dramatically slow a student's reading progress.  While File #1 above allows you to print out a page and and test your student by marking answers with a pencil, this new computer based test greatly speeds the process by allowing you to click answers with your mouse!  It also gives a professional layout that can be shown to parents and automatically makes a powerful "Practice Sheet" using our "Ping-Pong" strategy which you can cut-out and tape to the top right of each child's desk!   Great for Kindergarten Teachers to use each marking period.

The Most Important Rule in Life - 
If I Work Hard and Be Nice to Others.............
The majority of behavior problems can be dramatically reduced if we concentrate behavioral intervention strategies among children younger than 7 years old (the ages in which permanent personality traits are developing).  Laying a foundation for all of this, it is essential to give children some "common-sense" logic on how to achieve a better life.  To accomplish this, we've made a simple "colorful" phrase which can be printed on an 8x11 piece of paper.  It is called the "Most Important Rule in Life" - which is - "If I work hard and be nice to others then good things will come my way."  This phrase is printed in colorful letters on a single page and should be posted throughout your classrooms and halls of all Kindergarten and Grade 1 students.  Whenever you ask  - What is the most important rule in life? - the child should be able to recite the above answer immediately. If this phrase is memorized by your students, we will have given them important "Meaning" as to why they should demonstrate positive behaviors in school and in society. (1 Page).

BEHAVIOR STRATEGY CARDS
The 3 Steps if Someone is Bothering You -
Many students respond to conflicts from minor "name calling" to "bumps in the lunch line" by becoming angry immediately.  The words printed on this 3 page file are a proven technique for dramatically reducing student conflicts in elementary school and is one that desperately needs to be started in Kindergarten or earlier.  Major student conflicts will be diffused immediately when children put these 3 steps into real practice.  Have your students memorize the 3 steps in this phrase and they will have the skills and confidence to deal with all types of conflicts.    When you see a major conflict about to erupt - look at the child - hold up 3 fingers and say - "3 STEPS" - Nine times out of ten - the child will follow the 3 steps and immediately diffuse the situation.  So what are these magical steps with the power to move mountains?  Download the file and find out (3 Pages).

Alphabet Memorizing Cartoon Characters

Alphabet Activity Sheets
The Alphabet Cartoon Characters come to life in this fun activity which teaches - writing the letter - basic colors - spatial positioning - size variations and many other important kindergarten skills.  This is a teacher directed activity which takes about 15-20 minutes.

Alphabet Letter Memorizing Trick
WOW! - A very powerful and fun technique for achieving rapid memorization of the alphabet letter names.  This memorizing procedure (known as sequential memorization) dramatically reduces the usual time required for memorizing the letters of the alphabet.  While the technique is excellent for all students, its effectiveness is especially helpful for slower learning students who have difficulties with conventional teaching methods. 

Alphabet Letter Writing Practice Sheets - Lowercase Letters
Perfect as a follow-up to the above classroom activity.  Kindergarten students can do this on their own after a 1 minute explanation by the teacher. Each sheet teaches how to write the lowercase letter while also  further solidifying the memorization of the letter name.  Has a black and white "Phonics Character" line drawing which students color to help with letter sound memorization. SLAPPER - Recognition Memory Game
SLAPPER is a highly motivational game that helps students reach permanent memorization of almost any information.  Use SLAPPER in a "one-on-one" situation to introduce new letters or sounds.  It is also very effective for students who have trouble memorizing certain consonant or vowel sounds.  While SLAPPER is excellent for memorization of phonics related material, it is also excellent for memorizing any information, including – letter names – confusing words (where were who how want what etc) – and even math facts.  Although it is listed here in the Kindergarten section - it is perfect for students of any age.
NOTE:  This game is also a fantastic "ice-breaker" for new students you are seeing for the first time.

b-d-b-d Letter Teaching Strategies - Large Class Practice Sheets
Excellent group activity for children who become a little confused looking at the letters - b and d, you won't find a better technique for learning - "which is which."  (5 Pages) 

Short Vowel Sound Wall Strips
Full size 8x11 inch visual examples for the long and short vowel sounds.  These provide an attractive strategy for remembering the "difficult to learn" short vowel sounds.  File 6A contains the five short vowel sound sheets and file 6B (below) contains the five long vowel sheets.  (5 Pages)

CVC Wall Picture Cards
Each of these colorful 20 CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) picture words are formatted for an 8x11 piece of paper for full size viewing on a bedroom or classroom wall.  Kindergarten students should be ready for these words at least by the last 3 months of Kindergarten and should be reviewed the first month of 1st grade.   These 20 picture cards contain every consonant and vowel sound except "Y."

CVC Letter-Word Tracing Worksheet
The above 20 CVC words are used in this worksheet to provide practice in tracing the proper letter formation for each picture word.  Once the child can complete this non-frustrating worksheet satisfactorily, then begin the CVC Phonemic Awareness Worksheets below to really learn the words. (1 Page)

Number Writing Practice - 0 - 20
Part of the criteria for passing Kindergarten is being able to write the numbers in order from 0 to 20.  We've made two worksheets of differing skill levels to get these number writing skills mastered.  The first one uses tracing skills while the second tests the child's ability to write unassisted to 20.  

Consonant Sound Memorization - The "Where is" Worksheets
Before children can learn to read at maximum pace, they absolutely must have all consonant sounds memorized (b-c-d-f-g-etc.). We call these our "Where Is..." worksheets because the child must locate where the consonant sound is heard - at the beginning or end of a word.  These worksheets are not written in Word or PDF format, but are written in HTML format.  Click the link at left to go straight to the consonant index.  Choose the letter worksheet you'd like and watch your student(s) memorize consonant sounds faster than a jack rabbit can run to the carrot farm.

CVC Phonics and Vowel Sound Worksheets
Once your student(s) have at least been exposed to the consonant sounds in File 13 and vowel sounds - they are ready for this powerful activity.  These 5 specially sequenced worksheets move from easy to challenging to get the job done for solidifying consonant and vowel sound memorization - along with mastering the 20 CVC words used in our 20 CVC Wall Cards in File 7 (cat - dog - pig - fox - lid -etc.).  Each of the five skill levels challenge the child on a different sound in the word (beginning - middle - end).  By the way - these 5 sheets will also impress you immensely regarding how effective they are for getting a child to understand basic concepts in phonemic awareness.  Give a non-reader Skill-1 (who has some familiarity with consonant sounds) and you'll see the lights go on after 1 minute of attempting this activity.

Grade 1 ReadingKEY

  NEW GRADE 1 READING VOCABULARY LIST
This newly organized Grade 1 list replaces our previous Grade 1 list used prior to March 17, 2004.  It still contains 340 vocabulary words but lists have been organized with increased common vowel sound and reading rule categories. This list outlines the 340 words which must be memorized by the end of Grade 1.  Organized from the "most common" words at the beginning of the list to the "lesser common" toward the end and further divided into similar vowel sound categories.  Excellent for one-on-one testing to determine missing "essential Grade 1 Vocabulary." Teachers can use this for additional assignments - student conferences - and parent reading support.  Our research has shown when a student knows the 340 list words they will be reading at approximately a 2.0 grade level and score in the top 10% on standardized tests such as the Stanford and Wood-Cock Johnson.  If you wish to access the lists we were using before March 2004 - Click Here

The Audio/Video Phonics Teacher
All the letter sounds and rules used in our vocabulary program are available from this link in audio and video.  This is excellent for parents and Education students who want to learn the essential 44 sounds of the English language and important reading/spelling rules. Consonant Memorizing Worksheets

Difficult Digraphs - ch - sh - th - wh

 Classroom Vocabulary Builder Program
Teachers! Use this with your classroom students for just 15-30 minutes daily for a fun, motivational and highly effective reading activity. Also called the Student Reading Wall
Watch your student advance in reading ability at a dramatically faster pace using the special techniques in the Fluency Builder Lists. Place one of these "Time Charts" above each column "LEVEL" of the "Student Teaching Wall."  It is used to record the number of seconds it takes a student to say the column words and will result in astounding motivation for your students.

120 PHONICS NOUNS WORD LIST
The important 1st Grade Phonics Nouns from the LeapFrog "Phonics Desk" Program parallel our phonics worksheets and contain all major vowel sounds.  Use this sheet to assess mastery of the vocabulary words used in the above Phonics/Phonemic Awareness worksheets.  By the end of 1st grade your child should know the first 4 columns.

PHONICS ASSESSMENT
Shows all letter sounds a child should know by the end of 1st Grade - consonants - blends - short and long vowels - diphthongs (2 letters-2 sounds) - digraphs (2 letters-1 sound) and r-controlled vowels.  Make it a priority ! 100% of these sounds should be known by the end of 1st grade and at least by September of 2nd grade.  Excellent for one-on-one testing - pinpointing weak areas (for parent conferences) tutoring, etc.

SHORT VOWEL MEMORIZING CARTOON
While memorization of short vowel sounds are very important for enabling students to successfully "decode" new words - it is absolutely essential that short vowel sounds become memorized before beginning sentence writing activities.  This is because for a student to achieve any confidence in attempting to spell "unknown" words - he/she absolutely must know what letters to associate with the sounds heard in a word.  This means that not only do the consonant sounds need to be memorized, but the more difficult short vowel sounds as well.  Lack of this skill is the NUMBER 1 reason for spelling problems.  To overcome this problem, we've made a very effective short vowel memorization song and cartoon.  For members with a CD - access from the CD for higher quality sound.  By playing this video daily for one month - first grade teachers will be able to lock those vowel sounds in their students' memory!

WORD OF THE DAY - Readme File
The "Words of the Day" are a special group of Grade 1 words which we have found to take far longer for a student to master.  These words are difficult because they either contain irregular spelling (i.e. doesn't - been - want) or are visually similar to other words (i.e. were - where).  The document explains all about our special Word of the Day strategies and how to use them in a classroom or home.  Also includes details on making a Word of the Day stand for holding the letters.

WORD OF THE DAY - Small Word Cards
This word of the day file contains all 96 words (and sounds) written 3 times each on an 8x11 paper.   These are perfect for placing around the room to reinforce the Word of the Day.

WORD OF THE DAY - Oversize Alphabet Letters
All 26 letters of the alphabet are printed one full-size letter per 8x11 paper. Use these letters to spell your daily Word of the Day for a strong visual impact.

BLENDING BOX
A special technique that is highly effective for teaching students how to blend consonant sounds with a vowel sound.  Place these directly above your chalk board or along the top of a wall.  By the way, the blending box also does a great job in helping to solidify vowel sound memorization.

A wonderful tool that will enable you to make quality personalized handwriting worksheets in less than 30 seconds while also saving you $$$ in handwriting workbook expenses.  Note - You only have access to this program as long as your passwords are active due to the fact that the program that makes the worksheets is on our main server in Chicago.

GRADE 1 STORY BOOKS
A wonderfully effective way to finalize memorization of the Grade 1 Vocabulary List Words.  We are currently developing one book per vocabulary list "Level" beginning with Level 12 words and will continue through Level 36.  Each book is designed using vocabulary only from the current list words and from previous level lists.  This insures the child has at least been exposed to all words, thereby minimizing frustration and enhancing learning. Each book can be viewed directly on your computer screen or print the pages and staple for your own personal book.  Our online computer book reading is also an excellent tool for reading in groups of up to 3-4 students.  The teacher can use the mouse to point out words and sounds and children can take turns reading since letters and pictures are large enough to be seen from 3-4 feet away.  To view the latest books we have available click the ONLINE or PRINT version links under File 30.

STANDFORD ACHIEVEMENT TEST
The Stanford Achievement Test is given to students in Grades 1 and Grade 2 and is used to compare student performance across the country.   We made this practice test in the same format as the actual test so you can see exactly what is to be expected - no surprises.

Grade 2 ReadingKEY

GRADE 2 READING VOCABULARY LIST
Contains the "next" 800 most-common reading words found in early elementary textbooks.  These 800+ words must be memorized by the end of Grade 2 in order to remain "On Grade Level."   Excellent tool for quick identification of Grade 2 reading words students have not yet mastered.  Grade 3 teachers should begin the school year by testing all new students on these list words prior to beginning Grade 3 Program.  Students who master all words on this list typically score in the top 10% on Grade 2 standardized Reading Tests.

 Classroom Vocabulary Builder Program
(Also called the CLASSROOM READING WALL)

Note: Always begin the Fluency Builder List one year below your student's actual reading level.  Therefore, a child who is reading at middle 3rd Grade Level should begin with the middle 2nd Grade Fluency Builder Lists.

Getting parents involved has never been easier!  Parent participation increases dramatically if they are shown exactly what needs to be done with their child and if it requires only a few minutes of their time each night.   These simple parent-student activities will further solidify the learning of the week's vocabulary words and contribute greatly to your students' reading progress.

READING WALL TIME CHART
Use these when you have your Fluency Builder Lists taped on a wall and you have more than 5 students using the lists. Place these above the Fluency Builder Lists (File 33 above) to keep times and progress organized.

 Vocabulary Building Worksheets Grade 3 & Friday Test
You'll want to use these as an excellent 20-30 minute independent activity to solidify word recognition and meaning of the Grade 3 words taught in the Classroom Program (File 37) or Fluency Builder Lists (File 38). Each link brings up the four practice worksheets for the full week. These makes a great homework assignment as well.   Also included is the Friday Test (labeled FT) which teachers can use to test student mastery of the week's vocabulary words on Friday.  Can be used as part of your student's marking period reading letter grade.

 Classroom Vocabulary Builder Program
If you have a class of 7 - 30 students, this is a highly efficient way to teach the 4th Grade Reading Vocabulary words.   Place the new list in front of the class when introducing the week's new words and follow the directions outlined at the top of each list.  Vowel sounds have been color coded and letters are big enough to be seen over 30 feet across the room.  Its inherent design teaches phonemic awareness - proper decoding skills - and essential reading vocabulary.  These columns parallel the words in the same order as they appear in our Grade 4 Vocabulary List and Vocabulary Building Worksheets.

 Fluency Builder Lists
Also called the Student Reading Wall
Use the special techniques in these unique lists to dramatically accelerate the rate in which any student learns new reading vocabulary words.  You really will be amazed at how much faster your student will advance in reading ability. The lists are designed to be used in a "one-on-one" situation for 15-30 minutes per day with any student and are a breakthrough for enabling students to achieve dramatically improved learning rates.  Highly efficient memorization techniques are incorporated into this procedure which include the "Stop at the Vowel Sound" technique - color coded vowel sounds and organizing words into similar vowel sound categories.  If you are a teacher or parent, use these sheets with students reading below level to quickly bring them up to where they should be!  Also, use the Fluency Builder Lists with students demonstrating difficulty mastering the daily words in the Classroom Vocab Builder Activity (File 42 above).  Use scotch or masking tape to line these lists along the back of the class or hallway for organized practice.  If you are a parent or tutor, simply tape these sheets along any wall to organize and motivate your child's instruction.  The easy to follow directions are at the top of each list.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  Grade 4 requires a new strategy for word mastery - While the 2000+ Words introduced in Grades 1, 2 and 3 are typical conversational words (which students can already define), Grade 4 vocabulary words however, are not as common (for example, "rapid" instead of "quick").  Therefore, you now must spend time working on mastering word meaning and proper word usage.  We've made this easy for you - use our Vocabulary Building Worksheets (File 45 below) immediately following the Fluency Builder List activities.  For example, after your student masters the Fluency Builder Lists here, you should pass out the corresponding Vocabulary Building Worksheets - they'll do a fantastic job at solidifying mastery of the words and word definitions!

Students who are significantly below grade level can easily "catch up" to grade level if given 15-20 minutes daily practice.  For classroom teachers - line these pages along the back of the class or hallway for additional practice.  Have your assistant - volunteer - or student helper work daily with the lower students you've identified.  If you are a parent or tutor, line as many columns as you can along a living room wall and simply follow the easy steps listed at the top of each list.
